RCC Dam

History of Roller Compacted Concrete

The first use of roller compacted concrete (RCC) dates back to 1940’s in the world. In those years, RCC road application in the North America was observed on an airport runway in Washington. The use of RCC for a dam project for the first time dates back to 1960. In 1960, it is known that it was applied to the cofferdam of the Shihmen Dam constructed in Taiwan and for the first time, used for the Alpe Gere Dam as the RCC Dam in 1960 in Italy. In this method, the concrete was transported by using earthworks method. It was spread in 70-cm thick layers. Also, it was compacted by using bulldozer-mounted vibrators. RCC dams was applied as the building element as part of the rehabilitation of the Tarbela Dam in Pakistan. This took place between 1974 and 1986.

First RCC Dam

The first RCC Dam is the Shimajigaw Dam with 89 m height, which was constructed between 1974 and 1986 in Japan. Parallel to the development of RCC technology, the number of RCC dams has begun to increase in the world. In Turkey, the first RCC application dates back to the years 1982-1983. In those years, RCC application was observed as the core fill in cofferdam downstream the Karakaya Dam. RCC dam has a long history. However, it can be said that the popularity of RCC dams still continues. The fast construction and low cost of RCC increases its importance. In this context, it can be said that RCC dams offer a great potential in many places in the world and, in particular, in Turkey.
